Joy Division - New Dawn Fades (Live) This is a tab of the live version of the song, from the Paradiso, Amsterdam show that took place on January 11, 1980. It is different from the "Unknown Pleasures" album version. Part of Joy Division's appeal was that though the band lacked a lot of technical talent, they made up for it in a lot of interesting ways. Most songs they played would go through significant reworkings throughout the band's tenure, both in Ian's lyrics and in composition. Bernard and Peter were quite good at experimenting with alternate riffs and the like when playing live, even after "completing" a song by recording it in the studio. Here is one such example. Intro (comes in at about 0:38). When playing it, strum any extra note every now and then, whilst keeping in time. e|-------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------- B|-------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------- G|-------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------- D|-------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------- A|2~-----------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------- E|0~-2-3-5~-7-5-3-5-7-5-3-2-3-0~---0-0~-2-3-5-7-5-3-5-7-5-3-2-3-2-0~-|-0-0-0-2-0-0-2-0-2-0-0-2-0-0-2-0-2------ Main Riff (on this version, play until about 2:07). This part is particularly variant across all the versions. Bernard essentially just fingers the chords a bit every time. Sometimes he seems to only strike a few notes, other times he plays a full chord. It seems when Ian sings the first verse of the song, he is more prone to fingering the chords, and then during the second verse he strikes the full chords. Listen to this version for the specifics, but I say just rely on your own prerogative to play. Play each chord for one bar and repeat. e|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ B|7---5---3---5----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G|9---7---5---6----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D|9---7---5---7----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A|7---5---3---7----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E|------------5----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alternate Main Riff. I believe Bernard used power chords for most versions of the song, as described above (I won't say every single one, because I honestly do not know). However, if you want a brighter, better chord sound, play these chords as I described in the previous paragraph instead. Note that on the D chord you can put your pinkie on the third fret of the high e string intermittently to produce a higher tone that goes well with the song. E D C A e|0---2--(0)-(0)---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B|0---3---1---2----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G|9---2---0---2----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D|9---0---2---2----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A|7-------3--(0)---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E|0----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At 2:07, Bernard plays the ending section of the "Intro" until 2:19, when he resumes the "Main Riff." At 2:57, he plays the same ending section of the "Intro" until 3:22. Ending. Begin at 3:22 to the end of the song. The second time you play the third subsection, play the G string at the ninth fret twice, not once. e|--------------------|--------------------------|-------------------------------------------|----------------- B|--------------------|--------------------------|-------------------------------------------|----------------- G|--------------------|9-11-11-9----9-11-11-9-11~|9~---11-12-14-16-14-12-14-16-14-12-11-12-9~|----------------- D|--------------------|----------9~--------------|-------------------------------------------|----------------- A|7-9-9-7---7-9-9-7-9~|--------------------------|-------------------------------------------|----------------- E|--------7~----------|--------------------------|-------------------------------------------|----------------- (x2)| (x2)| (x2)| e|-----------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ B|-----------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ G|9----------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ D|--9~---9-7~|7----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A|-----------|--7~-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E|-----------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (x3)|
