Intro C F C G
C
Back through the years I go wondering once again
                          F
Back to the seasons of my youth
    C
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
                              F
And how my momma put the rags to use

           C
There were rags of many colors Every piece was small
                                    G
And I didn't have a coat And it was way down in the fall
      C F
Momma sewed the rags together Sewing every piece with love
            C G C
She made my coat of many colors That I was so proud of

As she sewed, she told a story From the bible, she had read
                                    G
About a coat of many colors Joseph |wore and then she said
              C F
Perhaps this |coat will bring you Good |luck and happiness
            C G C
And I just |couldn't wait to wear it And momma |blessed it with a kiss

   F C
My coat of many colors That my momma made for me
     F C G
Made only from rags But I wore it so proudly
  C F
Although we had no money I was rich as I could be
      C G C - D (key up)
In my coat of many colors My momma made for me

Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton page 1/2 in C

        D
So with patches on my britches Holes in both my shoes
                            A
In my coat of many colors I hurried off to school
         D G
Just to find the others laughing And making fun of me
      D A D
In my coat of many colors My momma made for me

         D
And oh I couldn't understand it For I felt I was rich
                                       A
And I told them of the love My momma sewed in every stitch
      D G
And I told em all the story Momma told me while she sewed
           D A D
And how my coat of many colors Was worth more than all their clothes
                                                  [store bought]
         G D
But they didn't understand it And I tried to make them see
     G D A
That one is only poor Only if they choose to be
      D G
Now I know we had no money But I was rich as I could be
      D A G
In my coat of many colors My momma made for me
              D
Made just for me

This "rags to riches" story is the signature song by country star Dolly Parton about her
"dirt poor" family of 12 children raised in a one-room cabin in Tennessee. Her
half-Cherokee mother played guitar and her grandfather was a Christian preacher,
fiddler and songwriter. She was given her own guitar at 7 was on TV and radio by 10
, and sought her fortunes in Nashville by 18. Her mother wished that a coat sewn from
rags would bring her "luck and happiness", but little Dolly would become the most honored
female country performer of all time. She blazed the trail for women artists like Taylor
Swift who also got her start playing guitar and writing songs in Nashville.
